Each year our clinic raises money for our Emergency Care Fund through our annual Dog Wash, as well as donations made daily at our clinic and at our annual Pet Photos with Santa. These funds are used to help pets and families to pay for emergency care that they otherwise could not afford. Donations to this fund are always welcome!
Raven is an 11 month old Australian Shepherd who had a traumatic fracture of her femur. Because of the location for the fracture and the severity of it, a cast was not an option and she needed surgery to repair the leg. A pin was placed through the bone and then a plate was put on it to hold it in place. This happened right during the COVID crisis of 2020 and Raven’s owners were not in a position to pay fully for her surgery the Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic Emergency Care fund was used to pay for a portion of her surgery. Raven is a really nice dog and we are so happy that we were able to help her.

Tuli is a very sweet older gal who was unfortunately hit by a car in March of 2020 in town. She suffered a large laceration to her lower belly region (just missing her abdominal organs and luckily in the muscle area) and this trauma caused luxation of her femurs bilaterally out of her hip sockets. Tuli had undergone emergency surgery to repair her wound at the time of her accident and recovered well from this trauma (she’s a trooper)—however her hips required major surgery called a femoral head ostectomy. Tuli’s love in life is frolicking and running around like crazy, so we were desperate to help Tuli get back to a quality of life she was used to. This surgery would repair her luxated hips by removing the femoral head and neck to make a “false” joint, in which should allow her to then use her hind limbs without the pain of bone-on-bone contact luxated femurs can cause.

Her owners were highly committed to getting Tuli back on her four feet, but as with most folks in these last few months ( Covid 19 !), were financially limited. Because of her good long-term prognosis with surgery, Tuli applied for the emergency care fund, received the surgery she needed and is doing great post-surgery! Her owners have been providing the necessary rehabilitation Tuli requires and highly appreciated the emergency care fund to help her return to her normal dog-life.
Darrell was returning home from a job about 1 a.m. and stopped at a brake check outside Dawson in October a few years ago. He thought he heard a cat meow. He shut his truck off and got a flashlight to look for the cat. It was slush snowing and cold. -5, wet, and just ugly. He was finely able to find the kitten in behind the garbage cans. Darrell put the cat in his truck and went home. On the way he noticed the kitten was hurt pretty bad. He did not believe this little kitten would survive. The kitten couldn’t move one leg and had a bloody nose and eyes. Darrell put him in box and went to bed. He figured he would make the kitten as comfortable as possible. Darrell awoke the next morning to find the kitten had survived the night. He dropped the kitten off and told us it was not his cat but because he was a tough kitty he would spend a little cash for him to get checked out. We called Darrell and let him know that the injured leg would need to be amputated. Darrell knew one hundred dollars was not going to cover the care needed for him. We talked about the Emergency Care Fund. He was able to put a little more towards the kittens care and we were able to take care of the rest for him. Darrell sends great thanks from himself and Brake Check, who now lives a normal life on the acreage. Without this fund Brake Check would not be with us because Darrell could not see himself spending that much money to save a 9-10 week old kitten he found behind a garbage can at a brake check.

Rico was found by a good samaritan along the side of the road. He had been badly injured by another animal and in need of immediate care. They brought Rico down to our clinic where he was hospitalized and immediate care was given. We were able to track down his owners and let them know we had Rico at our clinic. His injuries were extensive but we were certain that it was possible for Rico to live a happy and full life with the proper care.
Working with Rico’s owners we were able to use part of the Emergency Care Find to assist in the procedures Rico needed to lessen the financial burden on his family. It was amazing to see Rico quickly re-adjust to his new lifestyle with three legs. His energy was high and he was happy. Without support from our fundraising events and generous donations from our clients, Rico and his family might not be living the happy ending they deserved. |
