Warning to dog owners: canine parvovirus is deadly
Every year we see a dramatic increase in Parvo cases in the area.  Did you know that you can pick up the virus on your shoes and track it into your home, exposing your pets in the process?  Vaccinating puppies and older dogs against this deadly disease saves lives.  Most parvo cases require hospitalization and if left untreated will lead to death.

Senior care:  why is a Geriatric exam so important?
Pets over the age of seven years are considered to be Geriatric. After this age we will change your pets' exam reminders from Preventative to Geriatric exams.  A Geriatric exam is much more thorough, as pets over the age of seven. A seven year old dog in human years is 46 for small breed and 57 for large breeds.  A seven year old cat is 51 human years old!  The first signs of aging in  in our middle aged furry friend might be creaky or painful arthritic joints, vision/hearing loss, which are usually apparent.  However, they may also be experiencing heart, kidney, thyroid or other organ disease. Some organs can be more susceptible or damaged in the aging process and these pets will enter a life stage where they aren’t so nimble. It is helpful to consider some reasons for extra care for these geriatric pets and below are some recommendations to ensure a high quality of life until the very end.

Do I really need to deworm my pets?
Though it may seem that deworming is a small and routine part of your animals’ care, it plays a huge role into keeping your pets and family healthy. At some point in life, parasites will worm their way into most dogs’ lives. Dogs and cats are commonly exposed to worms through obvious ways such as rooting around in the dirt/grass, smelling or eating poop or hunting wildlife.  Most animals won’t show any signs that they are infected with worms, therefore, waiting until you see worms in their poop to act is not recommended.
